Pay attention to food desert effect to people's health
The health and vitality of people living in many urban neighborhoods can differ from block to block depending on how near or far they are to a grocery store or supermarket that offers reasonably priced fresh fruits and vegetables that are low in calories and nutritionally dense. In many urban neighborhoods, it's easier to buy a pint of liquor, a fried chicken wing, or a gun than a fresh tomato. The failure of supermarket chains to locate stores that offer fresh fruits and vegetables in inner-city communities--a form of food redlining--has had a profound impact on the nutrition, health, and well-being of families lacking cars or access to public transportation to get to well-stocked grocery stores. As a consequence, children growing up in families trapped in food desert zip codes are at risk of becoming obese and developing early hypertension and full-blown high blood pressure that can lead to type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Food deserts originated with the urban White flight of the 1960s and 1970s. When White, middle-class residents left cities for the suburbs, grocery stores followed, according to PolicyLink, a national nonprofit focused on social and economic inequities. In urban communities from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., and from Detroit to Houston, the nearest grocery store is roughly twice as far as the nearest fast food restaurant. About 400,000 Chicago residents live in areas with an imbalance of food choices where there are nearby fast food restaurants but no or distant grocery stores.

Food deserts, areas with no or distant grocery stores, are generally in communities where most residents can buy food only at "convenience" stores, liquor stores, gas stations, or fast food restaurants that sell foods high in fat, sugar, and salt. Getting to stores that offer a greater variety of foods is often challenging since many families lack cars and many city and state governments have cut back on investments in public transportation. When many Americans are resolving to eat more healthfully in the new year, children and families living in "food deserts" often lack that choice.

It's good to know that a number of groups are addressing this problem. The Philadelphia-based nonprofit Food Trust is working with school systems to provide healthy food and offering corner stores financing to stock healthy food and upgrade their refrigeration systems to better preserve fruits and vegetables. Various organizations are seeking federal and local anti-obesity funding to replicate this effort. Such efforts can make a real difference. In a 2002 study, University of North Carolina researchers found African Americans ate an average of 32 percent more fruits and vegetables for each supermarket in their census tract.

Nationally, the typical low-income neighborhood has 30 percent fewer supermarkets than higher-income neighborhoods. The problem is not only limited to urban areas; food deserts are also common in many rural communities. Across the country, too many families are forced to do their food shopping among convenience store shelves stocked with overpriced, highly processed fatty food with low nutritional value that often has passed its expiration date. In stores like these, staples such as milk can cost two dollars more than at a supermarket.

Dress up and get the fun from what your cosplay
In case you still haven't figured out what cosplay is, it is a hobby that allows you to transcend the world of reality to that of fantasy. In short, you dress up as a character, but it's not just that. You will have to 'become' the character and mimic the character's personality, gestures and even speaking mannerisms! It's like a grown-up game of dress-up and pretend.

For cosplayers, though, they are also doing this for the benefit of their audience who are usually more than a little excited to meet their favourite anime characters in 'real' life. This year's event was held at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre, and was one of the most successful ones to date.

Kudos to the organisers for staging a great event. It was very satisfying to see the uninitiated (read: people who are new to cosplay) make double takes whenever they ran into a Hatsune Miku whose gender seemed a bit 'ambiguous'. And for all you know, said Hatsune Miku was probably secretly laughing his butt off inside.

How to Size Up Health Coverage for College Freshmen

Health clinics and insurance plans vary widely from college to college. Some campuses offer only basic primary care, while others have a broad array of specialists on staff, from gynecologists to orthopedists. Insurance plans at some colleges cover claims of as much as $1 million a year, while others have limits of just $50,000 or less.

For most people, health-coverage details won't play a significant role in where students decide to attend school. But as campus visits heat up in coming months ahead of application deadlines for the next academic year, it's worth paying attention to how a school's health center works and what its insurance plan covers. Such factors could play a big role in students' well-being and expenses during their college years.

College students are a unique population with special needs and serious potential risks. They are for the most part young and healthy. But many students are for the first time away from their parents for an extended period. Some may be exposed to risky behaviors—sex, drinking, drugs. Stress and lack of sleep can adversely affect health, too.

Many colleges require students to demonstrate that their parental coverage meets certain standards before they can waive purchase of the school-sponsored plan. Cindy McGahey, director of finance and administration at the University of New Hampshire's health services, says that when parent plans miss the mark, it's most often because they lack prescription-drug or mental-health coverage—both of which are required under her waiver criteria.

Do you love Vintage clothing?
Walking into a jumble sale and decking yourself out in head to toe 80’s and 90’s does not mean you understand vintage shopping. It will not make you cool, despite what the legions of identikit 80’s Madonna tributes walking around Hoxton might like to think.

Nor is dressing in head to toe fifties a guarantee that you will look like a goddess from Hollywoood’s golden age. A retro mistake is just as bad as any other fashion mistake.

But good vintage fashion is here to stay for a very good reason – it offers unique clothing of the kind of quality that only top end designers provide today. Plus it tends to be a lot cheaper.

So what exactly is vintage? Well it’s certainly not an item of clothing made in the last 15 years, despite what all those 80’s and 90’s revivalists might think. But it’s still a fairly broad category, covering everything under 100 years old (100 and over is officially antique and deserves a telegram from the Queen or at least very gentle treatment).

The real advantage of buying vintage is not the price, or even the much vaunted uniqueness of the pieces, but the cut and the fabrics.

Vintage clothing was built to last, and limited budgets plus expensive manufacturing processes meant that good quality clothes were treasured. Vintage clothing is cut to fit so forget skinny celebrities; the ideal vintage buyer is a curvier woman and although sizes were smaller, clothing from earlier eras actually does account for hips, bums and busts.

To stay a step ahead of the crowd, shop outside of the season. Right now is the best time to hunt for some winter staples. A good vintage fur coat is great for the bitterest New York winter and works equally well in London or Paris. They’re extremely politically incorrect which means that they’re cheap, but if you’re conscience demands something a bit more ethical but still want the vintage look, modern faux fur copies are about the same price and can be found in some of the less pedantic vintage boutiques.

Look out for cocktail dresses that can be shortened to bring them up to date. 40’s fashion is great for a slightly gentler take on the big shoulder that dominated the A/W 09 catwalks.

The more unpopular something has been in recent years, the easier it is to find a vintage steal. Velvet is about to have a massive comeback having appeared on the Dolce & Gabbana, Proenza Schouler, Burberry, Prada, Lanvin and Chloe catwalks and is great for injecting a bit of feelgood glamour to your winter wardrobe. Look out for rich, dark colours and a fine pile to the fabric.

Warning on Skin Care Beauty

The Food and Drug Administration warned consumers Monday not to use skin products made by Clarcon because of high levels of disease-causing bacteria found during a recent inspection.

Analyses of several samples of over-the-counter topical antimicrobial skin-sanitizer and skin-protectant products revealed high levels of various bacteria, including some associated with unsanitary conditions, according to the agency. Some of these bacteria can cause opportunistic infections of the skin and underlying tissues and could result in medical or surgical attention, as well as permanent damage.

Clarcon Biological Chemistry Laboratory Inc. of Roy, Utah, issued a voluntary recall of some skin sanitizers and skin protectants marketed under several different brand names, the FDA said in a statement.

Examples of products that should be discarded include Citrushield Lotion, Dermasentials DermaBarrier, Dermassentials by Clarcon, Antimicrobial Hand Sanitizer, Iron Fist Barrier Hand Treatment, Skin Shield Restaurant, Skin Shield Industrial, Skin Shield Beauty Salon Lotion, Total Skin Care Beauty and Total Skin Care Work.

Polo golf shirts and Polo Ralph Lauren

The polo golf shirt, usually a three-button job with an embroidered doo-hicky on the chest (a pony, a crocodile, a dolphin, a skull and bones, a swoosh), is perhaps the most ubiquitous garment on the planet. But manufacturers are always looking for a new twist. Now the Polo Ralph Lauren company has come up with a way for you to customize their golf shirts to your taste.

In advance of Father's Day, Polo has introduced "Create Your Own Tournament Golf Polo," a feature that lets you choose from 10 body colors and two chest embroidery designs: the famous polo pony or your own initials. The Polo golf shirts, made of breathable pinpoint cotton mesh, can thus be tailored to your personal esthetic requirements, assuming you have any. For example, if you are exceptionally preppy, you can choose a pink (raspberry) pony to go on your green shirt. Or if you are exceedingly hip, you can opt for a black pony on your black shirt. To see in advance how it will look, you can use their website to model your choices electronically on Davis Love III, a Ralph Lauren-sponsored golfer.

David Lauren, a senior vice president of Polo Ralph Lauren, calls the feature, "a fun, original way for golf enthusiasts to infuse their own personal style to our classic polo." Other companies have experimented with similar personalization programs, for instance, Nike, which allows consumers to custom order its athletic shoes.
